The Triple Burner
In a healthy body, all acupuncture channels conduct energy. These channels are usually closely linked to an organ, i.e. the Lung channel, the Heart channel, but have functions well beyond their dominating organ.
The Triple Burner (TB) channel, a Fire channel, is different from all the other channels. It is not linked to a single organ, but to the body's overall fluid and energy system, serving as the channel that connects and coordinates the whole body into an interlinked network.
It ties together the three ‘body levels’ — the upper (respiratory function and blood circulation), the middle (digestion and nutrient transformation), and the lower (elimination and reproductive/fertility functions). Closely associated with the movement of fluids and the circulation of Qi, the TB influences a range of functions and patterns.
The TB commonly addresses:
- disturbances of metabolism and fluid balance (for example, swelling and itching)
- urinary tract issues and constipation - support for related organs (such as Lung, Heart, Stomach, and Large Intestine complaints)
- musculoskeletal complaints, especially of the shoulders and neck
- support for ear and eye problems
In a Western medicine framework, some practitioners liken the TB’s integrative role to that of the vagus nerve, while others find similarities with the lymphatic system because of its role in circulation and fluid balance.
According to the Chinese medical clock, TB activity is most pronounced in the evening; symptoms that regularly worsen between 9pm and 11pm may indicate TB involvement.
Acupuncture location: the channel begins at the ring finger, runs up the dorsum of the hand, continues along the forearm, crosses the shoulder and neck, wraps around the ear, and finishes at the outer brow.
